Freeview
In the Wigan and surrounding area's, Analogue Television is being turned off in 2009.
From December 2009, you will need either a Television with FreeView built in, or, a set top box for each Television in your house.
It may be possible to connect all your Televisions to 1 set top box, but you would have to watch the same program on all the Televisions at the same time.
If you have Cable, Satellite or Freeview you will still receive signals on these peices of equipment.
What you will not be able to do is get pictures on numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 on your analogue TV/VHS/DVD.
Freeview is a collection of around 40+ free digital TV channels, plus around 30+ digital radio stations, alongside the five regular channels – with no subscription to pay.
Available channels include BBC Three and BBC Four, News 24, ITV2,3 and 4 and a range of music, travel, shopping, and children's channels.
Reception is generally much better although some parts of the country still get a poor signal.
Generally in the Wigan and surrounding area's you do not need to replace your aerial.
Freeview will work with a standard UHF aerial.
Rule of thumb, buy your freeview receiver first.
Try it on your existing aerial.
If you do not get all the stations, then enquire about a replacement digital aerial.
There are no SNOWY pictures on a freeview receiver. The equivalent to a SNOWY picture when viewing Freeview on a poor aerial or in poor reception area's is;
The picture will break up.
The sound will dissapear or chirp
You may have some stations missing altogether. |
If you are buying a Freeview set top box, make sure you buy one with 2 scart sockets on the rear. This will enable you to connect it to your existing TV (make sure you have a scart socket on your TV) and to your Video or DVD recorder.
An alternative to a standard set top box is a PVR(Personal Video Recorder) see here.
